VETERAN ATHLETICS - HISTORY
Masters (Veterans) Athletics was the brainchild of an American lawyer, David Pain of San Diego. He organised the first event for older runners, of a one mile race for men of 40 years and older, some twenty eight years ago.Masters Athletics grew like wild fire after that first race and is today well established in 103 countries world-wide. The National bodies of these countries are affiliated to the World Association of Veteran Athletics (WAVA) which body in turn is an associate member of the IAAF.
In South Africa we welcome men and women of 30 years and older to join our association and competition takes place in five year age groups, eg. (sub-veterans 30-34; 35-49), and (full veterans 40-44 to 90 plusl) At our Championships we offer all the events on the olympic programme, including road walk. The World Championships includes all olympic events, a 10 km cross country and the marathon for men and women in all the age groups for women 35 years plus and men 40 years plus. The only criteria for membership is age, there is no restriction on participation at local, provincial, national or international level - all are welcome.
All the main provinces have Veterans Associations and they hold annual championships which are open to members of all the other Provincial Associations and a S.A. Championships is also held every year. Every 2 year (odd years) a world championships is held. For membership details and further information, please contact the secretary
