Abalimi works to ensure that the culture of self-help is strengthened among the poor in South Africa by supplying or facilitating training. They see food growing and environmental action in the grassroots as an entry point into a development process leading to all-round community health and prosperity.
Abalimi is helping to establish and assist community groups to maintain model projects - Neighbourhood Garden Groups, Community Allotment Gardens, The Manyani Peace Park, Green Schools and Green Streets. These models inspire other grassroots community groups to establish similar projects. A greater environmental awareness is emerging as a result , together with an understanding of biological-organic methods. Importantly, increasing numbers of people are obtaining a cash income through their agricutural activities. Urban agriculture as an economically viable activity is therefore an important focus of Abalimi Bezekhaya
Their two township garden centres (in Nyanga and Khayelitsha) supply low-cost manure, seed, seedlings, tools and pest control remedies to individual gardeners and organisations.
